WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT TECHNOLOGY TODAY?

Technology is pervasive today. When I was younger, technology was something specific that you could point to, but today it's really hard to draw the line of distinction. I think that’s good, because it’s bringing down the costs of creating and allowing everyone to be a maker. Technology is allowing a renaissance for a new young audience across all creative endeavors – fashion, music, film, you name it. I think that’s great for everyone.

IF YOU COULD INVENT ANY PIECE OF TECHNOLOGY, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Last summer, Marie Claire put out a sustainability issue that confronted many of the environmental issues facing all of us today, particularly within the fashion industry. I remember reading that it would take something like 12 years for a fashion chain to use up the amount of fashion waste that they produce in only 48 hours. We all need to become more responsible for creating and maintaining a sustainable industry, and we need to act on it quickly. If I could invent any piece of technology I would try to create a sound and efficient solution to this massive problem where reusing and recycling clothing would become automated.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT HOW WE LIVE WITH TECHNOLOGY, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

I would want technology to be more human and less tech. What I mean by that is, we’ve always had to figure out how to use technology on its own terms – press this button, swipe this way – you get it. There’s always a learning curve. I would want to figure out how to work on my terms. I think we’re starting to see that with voice operated devices like Alexa and Google Home. We can just talk, and humans are great at talking to one another to get things done and share information.

My only wish is that we wouldn’t become so reliant on it. Speaking personally, I really miss having more of my memory. It’s one of those things where you use it or lose it. It’s become to easy to throw all the information you need into your smartphone. I miss being able to recall things easily on my own; I feel a lot of nostalgia for when you had to know all your friends phone numbers by heart. If there’s one thing that I would change it would be that we hold on to our independence a bit longer and learn to go without.

WHAT IS THE DEVELOPMENT THAT YOU LOOK FORWARD TO THE MOST?

Benevolent artificial intelligence. I stress the benevolent part because I don’t want to live through some sort of Terminator scenario. I think if AI became a real thing, and was benevolent, it would have a huge impact on society.
