Award-winning Turkish artist Refik Anadol’s thoughts On: Technology and a glimpse into his Machine Memoirs collection.

Refik Anadol Machine Memoirs for Masthead Magazine

“It is no surprise that our built environments, coupled with the rise of technology and the expansion of the data-driven society, have detrimentally affected who we are as human beings. I do believe purposeful thinking and creating with technology will allow us to enhance our cognitive capacity in the age of machine intelligence.

-Refik Anadol

On: Technology

Machine Memoirs is a collection of AI art works that seeks to explore the relationship between memory and dreams, recognition and perception. By exploring the mind of a machine and utilizing machine intelligence, this collection aims to illuminate the seemingly unknowable. In this particular instantiation, we are using a neural network trained on 1.2 million images of architectural photography to hallucinate this data painting. Using GAN outputs to provide texture to an unfamiliar place, Machine Memoirs, illustrates a dreamscape of possible futures and hidden pasts.

Refik Anadol is a media artist, director, and pioneer in the aesthetics of machine intelligence. His body of work locates creativity at the intersection of humans and machines.
