WHAT IS BEAUTY TO YOU?
Our differences. There are nearly 230,000 known species in the ocean and as many as 2 million more that remain a mystery. It's this colossal entity that is vast, glorious, diverse and inundated with differences we have yet to discover. There are some things we understand about the ocean, and there is plenty we don't understand and still explore to understand. What we don't understand doesn't take away from its beauty. We're just like the ocean: vast, glorious and diverse, not always understanding the differences but knowing that difference is beauty.
HOW DO YOU THINK OUR VISION OF BEAUTY HAS CHANGED OVER THE YEARS?
In our world of social media where individuals can express their sentiments on what beauty is and what they want to see, we have pushed past and broken the barriers of a stereotypical "ideal" beauty. Perfection is no longer seen as a relatable kind of beauty many of us would want to attain. We want a kind of beauty that embraces what makes us unique, not a universal idea of beauty based on an exclusive, non-relatable image.
WHO WAS A BEAUTY ICON FOR YOU IN YOUR YOUTH?
Definitely our mother. She taught us that the greatest asset a woman can possess is not what one does with her body but what one does with her mind. She is such a beautiful example that as a girl, and as a woman, I never thought for one second to look elsewhere for a role model or a beauty icon.
WHAT FOR YOU IS THE ANTITHESIS OF BEAUTY?
Those who are closed-minded, superficial or have limited views of what beauty really is. Beauty transcends aesthetics, and those who truly see the beauty in others know you don't have to physically see a person to know what beauty is. Even the blind can feel the beauty of an individual, the definition evolves past sight.
